Hello,

I'm new to Instant Reality and X3D and therefore a little bit inexperienced ..

Right now normal maps don't work for me. I've tried the steps shown in another thread (http://forum.instantreality.org/index.php?topic=74.0), but the normal maps won't work properly. They show up, but just as a gray scale texture not responding to lights differently than the diffuse map.

I'd be happy if anyone could help me with this Smiley

regards,

Hi,

if they show up as gray scale textures, then you have used a height map. But here you need a (tangent space) normal map (easily recognizable through its baby blue color). So first you need to convert the image - either using a tool, e.g. the NVIDIA normal map plugin for Photoshop, or by using the NormalMap2DGenerator node.

...or much simpler, you could use the new CommonSurfaceShader node:

wow - the last one sounds pretty good Wink I'll try that on monday^^

I wasn't using a height-map. The normal map I used was baked in blender using tangent space (though this one is rather pink than blue ...) - but perhapps i used the wrong mode in the multitexture node? (I used "DOTPRODUCT3" for normal map and "MODULATE" for both ambient map and diffuse map)

Hmm .. I can't get it to work. Could someone give me an example of how to use the CommonSurfaceShader?

Thanks in advance!

There are a few examples in our examples svn repository:
http://examples.instantreality.org/trunk/rendering/commonSurfaceShader/

You should be able to get the whole rep with:
svn co http://examples.instantreality.org/trunk examples
